Abstract – Phytoplanktons are one of the most ecologically important species for aquatic ecosystem. They are also useful for the survival of living organism of earth as they are the major contributor of oxygen in air. The variability of species i.e. biodiversity of phytoplankton is one of the most important branch of study in the field of environment due to its ecological importance. There are a large variety of phytoplanktons present in water bodies that cover almost 70% area of earth surface. Phytoplanktons are the primary producer of energy in aquatic systems which are consumed by zooplanktons. Small fish and other small marine animals used to eat zooplanktons that are thereafter devoured by big fish and other large consumers. In this way, the food chain of marine ecosystem used to frame. In this paper, we studied the biodiversity of phytoplanktons in three different water bodies located at Kolkata and its surrounding area in the state of West Bengal of India and 7 different species of phytoplankton has been obtained.
